Saint-Boniface, le 30 mars 2023 Manitoba Possible and the Société de la francophonie manitobaine (SFM) announce that Manitoba Possible has decided to withdraw from negotiations with the City of Winnipeg regarding the sale of the St. Boniface Civic Square, including the fire hall located at 212 Dumoulin Street and the former St. Boniface City Hall located at 219 Provencher Boulevard.

The Board of Directors of Manitoba Possible made the decision to withdraw due to increased costs due in part to the pandemic.

"Since the project was submitted to the City in 2021, construction costs have increased significantly and interest rates have also increased significantly. Unfortunately, the original project is no longer feasible as originally presented," said Dana Erickson, Executive Director of Manitoba Possible. "Manitoba Possible and MFS have maintained a positive working relationship throughout the process. Manitoba Possible is always interested in working with the SFM and the Francophone and St. Boniface communities to create an accessible and inclusive society.

This decision means that the land remains the property of the City of Winnipeg, but the SFM and Manitoba Possible are actively engaged in discussions with other interested partners to develop a project that would meet both their common and distinct needs.

"We hope that the City of Winnipeg will be willing to be a partner in the preservation and development of the site," said Angela Cassie, President of the SFM. "Our goal is to work with Manitoba Possible, the City of Winnipeg and other partners to build a shared vision for the site, secure funding for its development and open dialogue with funding and community partners."

Although the interested parties have had only preliminary discussions, they all agree on the following fundamental principles for the future of the site:

  • The project will build community among people with a focus on accessibility, diversity and affordability
  • The development of the site will be universally accessible to people, going beyond standard accessibility requirements;
  • The current use, including the art gallery and sculpture garden, as well as the Francophone and St. Boniface heritage will be preserved and enhanced;
  • The construction of the site will be environmentally and socially responsible.

The Société de la francophonie manitobaine (SFM) is the voice of Manitoba's francophone community, ensuring that the community flourishes and that its rights are fully respected.

Manitoba Possible was originally founded in 1950. Today, Manitoba Possible is comprised of a head office and two offices in Winnipeg, and six regional offices across Manitoba.
