Winnipeg, May 9th, 2024 – Winnipeg City’s Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development will discuss today the municipal administration's report on the future of the old town hall of Saint-Boniface. Their meeting will represent a pivotal moment and could be an important step forward in ensuring the future of the carré civique de Saint -Boniface.

Les Ami.e.s du carré civique de Saint-Boniface applaud the general direction of the report. The president, Michel Chartier, also recalls that “the significant participation of the community in the future decision-making process is an essential condition for the success of any future initiatives, if we want to preserve and develop this heritage site so important to la Francophonie in Manitoba.”

The administration’s report includes several encouraging recommendations for the community, such as the removal ot the civic square from the list of surplus municipal assets. According to the report, all the buildings of the site that are still owned by the City would now be preserved. This includes the old Saint-Boniface city hall, the old fire station, the Sculpture Garden and the building where the Festival du Voyageur has his office.

Additionally, the report recommends that a long-term lease be negotiated with an entity to be determined, so that the civic square can remain open to the community and serve the public for decades to come.

For Michel Chartier, “this is excellent news and the starting point for developments which will better correspond to the community’s vision”.

The municipal administration proposes to create a joint committee, with City representatives and community representatives, to advise the City on the next steps in the process.

Les Ami.e.s du carré civique de Saint-Boniface emphasize the importance of equal representation within this committee. Its mandate must also be clearly formulated to guarantee that the decision-making process will respect the vision of the community when it comes to the future of the civic square. This is why Les Ami.e.s du carré civique de Saint-Boniface are proposing some modifications to the recommendations.

“Since last spring, when Manitoba Possible gave up on purchasing the old city hall and the old fire station, the City recognized that the next steps had to include community participation,” recalls Michel Chartier. “The initiatives that followed were carried out in consultation with numerous organizations and we continue to believe in a process that engages the community. The next steps must continue in the same spirit of partnership and collaboration. This is the best way to ensure a respectful decision-making process, focused on the desired results for the community and its future. »

Les Ami.e.s du carré civique de Saint-Boniface will be present today at the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development to share their views with the councilors.

The public can attend the committee meeting scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Council Building on Main Street or follow the committee proceedings online.
